The Ailsa - 12th green

Home to the iconic Ailsa, an Open Championship course four times over, Trump Turnberry offers one of the world's great golfing experiences.

Watson, Norman and Price have all won the famous Claret Jug here at Turnberry. And, in 2009, Stewart Cink added his name to that exclusive list following his play-off triumph over Tom Watson at the 138th Open.

The history of golf at Trump Turnberry continues to evolve, with June 2016 marking the reopening of the Ailsa course following extensive changes by renowned golf course architect, Martin Ebert.

In 2017, The Bruce will be unveiled as Trump Turnberry’s second course.

The Ailsa

Turnberry has long been described as a ‘jewel in the crown’ of Ayrshire, Scottish and world golf.

It was written by Mr William Murray, on the 23rd August 1892, that;
“A meeting of Gentlemen favourable to the formation of a Golf Course at Turnberry Castle will be held at the Lighthouse, on Saturday, 27th August at 3pm."

This followed an initial correspondence from Mr Murray of Girvan to The Marquess of Ailsa seeking permission to form a golf club at Turnberry. There followed many years of deliberation over the quest until the Third Marquess of Ailsa commissioned the first course at Turnberry, which opened in 1901.

As a result of two World Wars, the course was devastated and had to be reshaped each time. In 1977, the Ailsa played host to the first of four memorable Open Championships - the famous Duel in the Sun - where Tom Watson triumphed against Jack Nicklaus in an epic battle.

July 2014 brought a new dawn for the Ailsa when Turnberry was acquired by Mr Donald J. Trump. On the advice of the Royal & Ancient, Mr Trump appointed Mackenzie & Ebert, golf course architects to 6 of the 10 Open venues. Along with the appointment, came Martin Ebert who, with Mr Trump, set about inspiring a new era of this historic course.
