Hole 16 - Perfect Play Explained

016 Ailsa

Newly designed for the 2009 Open, the 16th hole is now a long dog leg from left to right. With the prevailing wind hurting of the tee it is imperative that a good drive is struck from this tee in order to give yourself the chance of reaching this green in two shots. A driver up the right half of the fairway offers the best angle for the approach shot but the bunker on the right side of the fairway must be avoided. The 2nd shot into this green must carry Wilson's burn which runs in front of this green, even shots landing on the front quarter of this putting surface could still roll back down the steep slope into a watery grave. It is vital that you have enough club to carry the ball into the heart of this green with your approach shot. A well struck 2nd shot will tend to gather into the centre of this green from the slopes that lie both left and right but you are always left with a tricky putt on this 16th green.
